So I have a monster sore throat. It's the tail-end of the flu I've been fighting (which luckily never became fully developed) - and this is the final Bowser for me. It feels like someone is sitting on my chest while shoving a flame-throwers stick down my throat. Yippee! It's been bearable until this morning when I woke up and couldn't talk because it was too painful. Lance immediately jumped on earthclinic.com to see if he could find a natural remedy for a sore throat.
Success!
Gargle cayenne pepper... that's their answer.
So I'm slightly nervous. I was reading the forum, and a lot of people said while it did in fact help, it was a fiery experience. However, the common thread between the horror stories is using TOO much cayenne pepper - exceeding the recommended dose.
SO I'm going to try it.
Lance hopped up and ran to the store just a few minutes ago, so wish me luck for when he returns.
Here's a little bit more info about instructions (if you care to try it) and the effects of cayenne pepper usage.

Method 1: (You may want to put some sort of chapstick or vaseline on your lips before this.)
Begin with 1/8 tsp of cayenne pepper and warm water. gargle, don't swallow. Repeat every 15 minutes as necessary. (If you feel a burning after gargling, place a piece of bread at between your tongue and roof of your mouth and press.)
Method 2:
In a tall glass of pulpy orange juice, mix in 1/8 tsp of cayenne pepper and drink. (This is for those who can't handle the spicy taste of the cayenne pepper).
A sore throat is an infection that can be either viral or bacterial. It is most commonly caused by a contagious viral infection such as the flu, cold or mononucleosis,(that's me....the dumb flu!) although more serious throat infections can be caused by a bacterial infection such as strep, mycoplasma or hemophilus. Bacterial sore throats respond well to antibiotics while viral infections do not. For viral infections, there are many natural remedies that you can take to cure a sore throat. Some of these folk remedies work within an hour or two, others take effect overnight.
If it is too late, as in strep, it takes gargling with cayenne in water every fifteen minutes until it goes, and be patient, because it GOES. I haven't had a sore throat take hold in 15 years or more, though many have tried to start up, which also is a way for many illnesses to sprout. I generally will gargle cayenne in water at whatever strength I like and do it as much as I can until I tire of it, and then repeat every fifteen minutes, each time swallowing a tiny bit real slowly (not necessary). It only stings the tongue a little when spitting out, otherwise, no discomfort, you can get used to even the swallowing part when you see how well it works. I use the cheap Mexican stuff, but also keep on hand in refrigerator the pesticide free stuff from health store. Cayenne is a miracle cure for ulcers and so many other conditions, plus aids assimilation of nutrients and vitamins. I will keep cayenne in water in the bathroom in case I get up in the night, so I can gargle once in the night if I am very sick, but if it is in water, it will go bad quickly and needs to be put back in fridge in morning
okay so here goes... I'll let you all know the results once i figure it out.
Oh, and to back up this theory a little more - read on.

that sounds terrifying. I would think it would make it worse, but then again, I don't know much about anything medical/holistic/etc.
I am proud you are truly brave!
Try Honey! That is what we do...whenever either of us are feeling sick (aka sore throat etc) we take a spoon full of honey and then make sure and clean our noses... (you know like the netti pot etc). Tell me how the pepper works...sounds hot?
Wow! Let me know how that goes. I like spicy stuff but not sure how I would react to cayenne pepper hangin' out in my throat. Hope you feel better!
