This is not a joke.
This statistic comes from the Social Security Administration website.
The top boy and girl names for 2009 are…
Jacob
And
Isabella
Wow, Americans. Wonder how those names ended up as #1? Weird.

And yes, I had to put the no-shirt-shot of Jacob. So sue me.
This sparked my curiosity about my name and its rank in my birth year. I looked it up.
Ashley gets the #2 spot for 1986!
No wonder there was always at LEAST 2 other Ashleys in any given class in any given year.
So my curiosity skipped to Heather’s name.
#9 for 1984.
Then Christian’s.
Christopher was #2, but no Christian. So I broadened the search to 100, and it was ranked at 60 in 1990. Not bad mom and dad!
Next, logically, I searched Celeste.
# 351 in 1993.
Looks like mom and dad got more creative as the children went on. Woop!
Jerry in his birth year was #30 and Kimberly was #16
(Have I gotten slightly carried away with this topic? Maybe...)
I searched for the popularity of my favorite names (which, if you don’t already know them, I will keep them to myself. I’m so paranoid someone will steal them and they will rapidly reach #1 on the national baby name list!), and good news is they’re within the top 200 most popular names of 2009, but not in the top 15. I think I am a little obsessed with these numbers due to the fact that I shared my name with every other girl in the school (Sometimes my first AND middle name together!) and I remember hating it. (and I NEVER use the word hate).
I don’t want my kids to have some weird name like Grass or Helicopter, I don’t want to encourage bullies – but I would like them to have a fresh name that their teacher’s don’t have to tack a “W.” after their first name. (After all, due to my very common name and lack of signifier in his phone, it is the reason Lance and I started dating…if you don’t know the story, ask. Ill tell you. It’s pretty humorous. Maybe a common name isn’t such a bad thing then, eh?)
On a slightly more interesting note, Ashley reigned the top of the name charts, never dipping below #4, usually standing tall at #1 from 1982 – 2002, where it finally sinks to a crummy #5. In 2009 it took a huge dip and stands at #9.
Awesome.

haha helicopter wakefield. I kinda like it. also keep in mind though, it's really annoying to have to correct people every time they first meet you, and people mispronounce your name and it's too awkward to correct them after a few times...haha I've also heard that the name cullen has become unexpectedly popular recently.
haha thats sooo funny about the twilight names!!!
and i love your name. in fact, one of my little girls middle names will be ashley.
the end. love you.
LOL this post made me laugh ash! Just fyi I named you ashley because I LOVED the name not because it was popular... so its all good there lil girl. If you couls name yourself what would you name you!?? just curious
Johanna - im SURE that has gotten a little annoying, having to either quietly suffer or correct someone. haha. atleast its a pretty, unusual name. I like Helicopter Wakefield. A good ring to it. hahah
mom- i know you didn't do it out of popularity, duh! i like my name, actually. i just didn't like that i shared it with everyone! so ashley is just fine with me. :)
katherine - ill email you. haha
It's soo funny that you posted this because Adam has a grandfather named Edward that he absolutely adores and wants to name a son Edward......so I'm thinking it might have to be the 3rd son (if there is one) just so I can't be blamed for being a Twilight fanatic.
